Ember-resistant vents stop the most common way homes ignite.

In a wildfire, most homes are not ignited by flames. They are ignited by embers, and the easiest way in is through the vents. Ember-resistant vents close attic, eave, and foundation openings against ember intrusion while keeping the home ventilated.

Why vents matter

Embers travel a mile ahead of the fire. Vents let them inside.

Wind-driven embers land on and around a home long before flames arrive. Standard vents with quarter-inch mesh let those embers pass straight into the attic and crawlspace, where they land on insulation, stored items, and framing. Once an ember ignites inside the structure, exterior defenses no longer matter.

What ember-resistant means

Vents tested to resist ember and flame intrusion, using fine corrosion-resistant mesh of one-sixteenth to one-eighth inch or engineered baffle designs, consistent with California Building Code Chapter 7A and the IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home standard.

Vent protection is one of the highest-impact, lowest-disruption hardening steps a home can take. It is required for new construction in California WUI zones and recommended for every existing home in a fire hazard severity zone.

Are ember-resistant vents required in California?

New construction in designated Wildland-Urban Interface areas must meet California Building Code Chapter 7A, which includes ember-resistant venting. Existing homes are not required to retrofit, but vents are one of the first upgrades recommended for any home in a fire hazard severity zone.

Do ember-resistant vents actually work?

Vents tested to ember and flame intrusion standards materially reduce the chance of embers entering the structure. They are a core requirement of the IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home standard. No single upgrade guarantees survival, which is why vents are installed as part of a prioritized hardening plan.

Which vents on my home need replacing?
